On April 25th, the Hamilton Small Animal Care class took a trip to Wanderer’s Rest. Wanderer’s Rest is a shelter for animals who are unwanted, strays, and for animals whose owners can’t take care of them. The shelter’s services are available for Madison County residents only. The class toured all the areas in the building from the cat room to the dog kennels. After a tour of the building, and some demonstrations of how to handle the dogs and cats, the class volunteered the rest of their time to help care for the animals. Some students walked dogs, others played with the cats, and some helped clean around the building. Wanderer’s Rest also adopts animals to the public if they are ready for adoption. Wanderer’s Rest also needs donations from the public to help with food, litter, and other necessities for the animals. Wanderer’s Rest wants to help keep animals in homes, so if an owner can’t afford food they will help provide for the animal. They will be at the Hamilton Farm Days, next Tuesday, May 1st with many of their animals which will be available for adoption. So, please, help Wanderer’s Rest with donations, volunteering, and adoptions!

Digital Art at HCS
Date: April 25, 2012
Written by: Hayleigh
Last year, a new class was introduced to the art curriculum at HCS. Digital Art, as the class is called, is a huge hit among the student body and is taught by Mr. Watkins. It is held in the computer lab everyday, cell 6. In this class, the students use computers to create works of art instead of using paper and paint brushes. Students create many pieces of art including magazine covers by using new photoshop techniques. Some other projects they will do this year include "visual puns" and "me and my clones". Here are some pictures of the students working on their art.
Knights Save Lives

The Emerald Knights are turning...red? Yes, and they are saving three lives in the process. Hamilton Central is hosting yet another blood drive, and in less than an hour the biggest difference can be made. According to the American Red Cross Foundation, every two seconds there is a person who needs blood in the U.S.. Several students participated in the blood drive this past Tuesday. The blood drive occupied the gym all day and many people were seen going in and out, participating in this simple, yet life saving event. So next time there’s a blood drive, don’t hesitate to make the world a better place. Thanks to the Hamilton Honor Society for organizing this event.
Hamilton PTO Funds iPods in PE Initiative

Written by: Mr. Coriale
When we see runners and other athletes with their mobile devices on their arms, we generally assume they are listening to music, right? Not these fourth and fifth graders! Thanks to a generous grant from the Hamilton Parent Teacher Organization, students will be using their iPods in PE class to monitor their health in areas such calories burned, heart rate, peak performance, pace, and distance. Thanks to Ms. Poole's savvy research and investigation, she has found some great apps that teach students about health, wellness, and fitness, and most importantly, offers them they opportunity to monitor their own. Today, not only were students able to bring their devices to class, they were also introduced to the idea by Colgate students who introduced them to the "13 Tips for a Healthier Lifestyle". They are:
1. Vary your veggies
2. Know your limits
3. Do not sugarcoat
4. Get plenty of calcium
5. Limit TV time
6. Be active and have fun
7. Try out a new sport or activity often
8. Invent a new, fun game to share with others
9. Tell your family about your day
10. Smile EVERY day!
11. Don't be afraid to meet new people
12. Develop a regular sleep schedule
13. Early to bed, early to rise!
Many thanks to the Hamilton PTO for their continued support of student learning and to Colgate students for their ongoing partnerships!

Music Videos in the Writing Workshop
Date: April 24, 2012
Written by: Mr. Coriale
Remember the days when writing was flat, stale, and even routine? At HCS, we are proud to say that those days are long, long gone! Enter, the days of authentic, purposeful, and empowering writing opportunities. Our students are exploring many aspects of themselves as writers throughout our learning community, and each is excited about and proud of their various writing pieces.
After Ms. Castillo's sixth graders crafted persuasive writing pieces in Writing Workshop, a process rich in collaboration, reflection, and conferring, students began an innovative journey using their iPads, computers, and writer's notebooks. Their mission was to turn their piece into a music video which they produced, directed, and edited. With the incorporation of both writing skills and the Thinking Strategies, students created videos that were as unique as their topics, which included:
*Obesity in American youth
*Role models in the media
*Animal rights
*Bullying
*and more!
Below is a sample of one of the finished products about bullying and grades. You will find both the writing piece and the music video. Great work, sixth graders!

Looking Ahead: Chem Free After-Prom Party
Post Date: April 24, 2012
Event Date: May 5, 2012
Written by: Andrew
This year, as in the past years, there will be a highly anticipated After-Prom party at Hamilton Central School. At this party, students will be required to stay at the school until 3 am and be closely monitored to make sure they arrive at the school the after the prom. If students are late, their parents will be notified. This is done so that students are not making decisions that could be harmful to themselves and others, and to give them an opportunity to further enjoy themselves on prom night. There will be lots of activities for students to do for fun such as the bungee run, games, raffles and there will also be a movie in the auditorium. The after prom party will run from 12:00 am to 3:00 am and students must turn in the Knight for Life Pledge in order to attend. This pledge is a chem-free promise to yourself, your families, teachers, and friends that you will not make destructive decisions. You don't want to miss this event, prom-goers! See you there. Check out the pictures and video below from last year's event!
Big Barn Abroad in Germany
Date: April 24, 2012
Written by: Branden
Recently Barney Prince traveled to Holzgerlingen, Germany over spring break for various wrestling dual meets. This is a tradition that Barney's wrestling club, Mohawk Valley Wrestling Club, participates in every four years. He wrestled three different regional German teams and won two out of the three matches which is pretty good, considering that his opponents were several years older than him. He stayed with a German family and they were extremely nice, and made him several traditional dishes. He stayed there for eight days. They also took him to many scenic areas like the Mercedes Benz museum. Barney said “ I loved it and it was a great experience. I hope I get the chance to go again sometime soon, which will probably be in the summer.” Congratulations Barney on such successful matches and a safe trip to Germany.
First Grade Authors Go "Live" on Mrs. Miller's Website

Not only are Mrs. Miller's first graders dynamic authors, they are also eloquent and fluent readers! After crafting a "How To" piece in Writing Workshop, each student practiced reading his or her piece aloud to share with their parents, families, and friends via Mrs. Miller's website. Each student's piece is now live on the website, and we invite our entire community to learn from our first grade experts. You will learn how to feed a dog, make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and even how to catch a fish! Click on the link below to bring you to Mrs. Miller's website. Once there, navigate to the "First Grade Authors" tab located on the top of the page under "More". Great work, first graders!

April is Autism Awareness Month
Date: April 17, 2012
Written by: Bailey
April is Autism awareness month. Autism is a disorder that usually appears the first three years of a person’s life. It interferes with social interaction and communication; children and adults with autism have problems with communicating with their peers around them. Each person with autism is affected differently, on a spectrum ranging from mild to severe, and 1 in 88 people are diagnosed with this disorder. Autism can be diagnosed by a neurologist, psychologist or a developmental pediatrician. There is no cure for autism, but if someone gets diagnosed at a young age, they can get treatment and help with education.
In Mrs. Miller’s first grade classroom, the students are learning about autism throughout the month of April. They are also learning about different kinds of autism and how to be a good friend to someone who has autism. The student teacher in Mrs. Miller’s class read The Autism Acceptance Book. A fifth grader even visited these students to talk about effective ways to communicate with some people with autism. The kids learned how to be accepting and how people with autism would like to be treated. After reading the book, students have learned things about autism they didn’t know before. First grader Morgan learned that “You can never grow out of autism,” and first grader Jaheal said, “The color blue represents autism.” As part of being aware of autism, during snack time, the teacher turned off the lights and lit the room with blue lights and the students ate blue rice crispy treats. Every day they are learning something new about autism.

HCS Forms a Wall Against Bullying
Date: April 5, 2012
Written by: Mr. Coriale
Bully. This is a word that resonates with so many people of all ages. For many adults, it brings back memories of their childhood when they faced a bully in school. For our children today, the word has taken on a whole new meaning. Many years ago, bullying was thought to be a “natural part of growing up”, a notion that we now realize is utterly unacceptable. As part of HCS’s dedication to create an environment that is free from bullying, the School Team (consisting of teachers, parents, administrators, and a BOE member) crafted an opportunity for students to express their views on bullying. The Bullying Wall at HCS is currently on display in the main hallway, and represents the feelings of students throughout our PreK-12 learning community towards bullying. Over the past few days, watching students quietly reflect upon their classmate’s work and share their thoughts with one another has been inspiring. It is clear that this will be the beginning of the end to bullying at HCS.
You will notice that many of these posters include the words “hero” and “upstander”. We ask that you to talk with your children about bullying, and that being an upstander (rather than a bystander), will make them a hero. We encourage students to be an upstander by talking to an adult and supporting their classmates when they see or are involved in a bullying situation. Together, we will continue to AIM HIGH!
Below are some pictures of the posters from the wall. We invite parents to visit the wall as well, as it will be displayed through the week of April 16th.

Science and Technology Fair 2012
Event Date: April 4, 2012
Post Date: April 5, 2012
Written by: Mr. Coriale
One of the most highly anticipated traditions at HCS is the Science and Technology Fair. Traditionally, elementary-aged scientists and technology experts show off their experiments, scientific studies, and classroom projects in the HCS cafeteria. With Ms. Castillo at the helm this year, some changes were made that will surely be a welcome part of this event for the future. This year, students in K-12 were invited to participate and share their learning. Additionally, the event was held in the high school gym, which allowed for more interaction and dynamic placements of individual projects.
This year, there were 71 entries including classroom projects from Mr. Latella, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Poyer, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Orth, and Mrs. Bossard. Greg Palmer, owner of his own vacuum repair business, showed off his expertise by teaching visitors the ins and outs of buying a quality vacuum. He even brought a collection of machines to showcase!
Thank you to all of the students for sharing their learning and thinking at the HCS Science and Technology Fair. Also, thank you to Ms. Castillo for all of her hard work in planning such a successful event and to all of the custodians and adults at HCS who helped make this a memorable evening.
Check out the pictures below, which highlight the night.

Civil Rights Movement Remembered by HCS Fifth Graders
Date: April 3, 2012
Written by: Andrew
Recently Mrs.Merrill’s 5th grade class has been working on their long-awaited Civil Rights project that students in her class do every year. This year, their project is to make a photo essay that has aspects of many people from the Civil Rights movement and also to compare how life was during this era to how life is in the present. One of the many resources they use for research, is the book A Dream Of Freedom by Diane Mcwhorter. Students also had access to approved websites on the computer. Once the students are finished with the project, they will sync it with the song “Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Greenday. The parents will be able to view the projects at the Hamilton Movie Theater upon completion of the movie.

The girls varsity softball team has started practicing for the upcoming season. The girls varsity softball team is coached by Mr. Dowsland and assistant coach Dave Unger. The girls have been fortunate to be able to practice outside due to the recent nice weather. During pre-season, the Lady Knights hit off a pitching machine and practiced fielding. The key for the girls to have a successful season will be up to the seniors. The Lady Knights won the first two scrimmages at Mudville. They first faced off against Fort Plain and Canastota. They will begin their regular season on April 2nd and will play in a tournament in Mudville. The Lady Knights are hoping to return to the section three final four. Good luck, ladies!

College Week at HCS
Date: March 30, 2012
Written by: Patrick
This past week at Hamilton Central was “college week”. Throughout the week, several of our faculty members spoke to us in forum about their life after high school and into college. A major point they all conveyed was that, what you plan on doing in college and for the rest of your life, most likely won't be what you actually are doing in 10 years time. Also, the counselors challenged our thinking by providing trivia questions that have to do with different colleges. Along with all of that, yesterday some of the teachers in the high school and elementary dressed up as different professions. These teachers included, Mr. Jarcho, as a chief, Mr. Day, as a judge, Mrs. Smith as a orthopedic doctor, Mrs. O'Connor as a pilot, and Mrs. Hanson, as a landscaper. Along with these AMAZING costumes, students had the opportunity to ask that teacher about each of their professions they were dressed up as and were provided information about each including education, salary, and training. Check out the picture below of some of our adults in their "new career uniforms".
Also included below are pictures from the college door day where teachers decorated their classroom doors to represent their college journey!

Agriculture Awareness at HCS
Date: March 30, 2012
Written by: Jacob
Mrs. Bossard’s conservation class has some company for the rest of the year! Every Wednesday, the high school elective class welcomes the Pre-K students from Ms. Briggs and Mrs.Kenyon’s classes. They are exploring all the fun facts and realities that the agricultural community has to offer them. Some of the things they have or will learn about include the milking process and how the food chain? Their most recent activity was making a life necklace. They took cotton balls and planted a soybean seed in the middle of it! This partnership will help to build skills and understanding in our youngest students about the importance of the men and women who dedicate themselves to agriculture each day.
Below are some pictures from this collaboration! Thank you to Miss. Briggs for sharing them.

Raised Garden Beds
Date: March 30, 2012
Written by: Jacob
Have you ever wanted to start your own garden in a confined area? Well, the FFA purchased five raised garden beds, which are 4x12 boxes made from rough-cut larch wood. These boxes will be laid with netting so weeds cannot grow through the boxes and then will be fertilized with natural compost from 4M Farms. Once these boxes are in commission, elementary classes will adopt a box and plant a variety of low bearing plants such as turnips, beets, squash, lettuce, and all other sorts of vegetables! This is a great way to get the entire elementary learning community involved in maintaining our gardens at HCS and build skills that will be essential throughout their lives. Below is a picture of the raised beds in their beginning stage.

The Chicks are Hatching!
Date: March 29, 2012
Written by: Anne-Elise
Chicks are hatching In Mrs. Bossard’s class today thanks to the incubator lended to us by Colgate. The eggs were turned for 18 days, then moved to a styrofoam incubator so that the chicks could prepare to comfortably peck their way out for the remaining three days in the hatching cycle(21 days).
When incubating the chicks, Mrs. Bossard made sure that the Incubator thermostat constantly remained at temperatures of 99.5-101.5 F. If the temperature was even the slightest above or below, the chicks would be in danger of dying. Water was also important to the process. Instead of tap water, lukewarm distilled water was used because tap water is purified with chloride, which is harmful to chicks. The water, used to moisten the eggs so that the chicks don’t stick to them, is either stored in sponges or spritzed on the eggs, depending on the type of incubator.
A day after the chicks are fully hatched and their food source (the yolk) used up, they will be moved to a brooder box. A brooder box is a box with a warm light bulb inside, along with some chick feed and water. This is where the chicks will live until they instinctively stray from the warmth. Once away from the light bulb, the chicks will be more independent and ready to go to homes.
That’s not all- the Ag room will even be hatching duck eggs this year! Check out the pictures below from this exciting journey!

The Digital Broadcasting class has taken on a new task recently. HCS Superintendent Diana Bowers requested that a group from the digital broadcasting class to work on a new student video project. This will include the creation of a DVD that will be handed out to new students who may be attending Hamilton Central School. The DVD will inform both parents and students about many aspects of HCS including classes, teachers, forum, schedule, clubs, sports, and many other attributes of our learning community. We hope that these videos will help ease new students' transition to everyday life at HCS. Here is a short sneak preview of one our videos informing students about lunch.

Each year, students wait in anticipation for "foreign language week" at HCS. This tradition is one that showcases the variety in our language offerings and teaches the diversity of each through student and teacher-created media. Each morning over the course of last week, students were greeted with a humorous video in forum, each of which promoted specific classes and languages. By the end of the week, it was clear, that students were able to extend their appreciation for diverse languages as well as gain some perspective into future class offerings in their educational career. The week ended with students and teachers coming up on stage to sing Happy Birthday in each language-we had some great talent! Great work Mr. Day, Mr. Rains, and Ms. King! We are so lucky to offer French, Spanish, and Latin to our students at HCS!

HCS Continues Anti-Bullying Efforts
Event Date: March 16, 2012
Post Date: March 26, 2012
Written by: Mr. Coriale
It is no secret that bullying is a major concern in our schools across the nation. Bullying impacts students of all ages socially, emotionally, physically, academically, and even in terms of daily behavior. HCS is committed to putting a stop to bullying in our learning community and has recently adopted the Olweus Anti-Bullying Prevention Program as our foundational framework. As part of the superintendent's conference day on March 16th, the core Olweus team lead an initial training for all of the adults at HCS. It was an opportunity for us all to come together and discuss the implications of bullying at our school to create a safe environment for students that is free of bullying. This training included data analysis, defining bullying, and activities that uncovered some of the bullying trends among students at HCS.
There will be much more information coming to parents and community members in the near future, but here are some highlights of the program:
2. Classroom
3. Individual
4. Parents
5. Community
Please check back soon for some of the posters created in this training, highlighting some of the conversations about bullying at HCS.
There will be much more information coming to parents and community members in the near future, but here are some highlights of the program:
- Students and adults participated in bullying surveys in an effort to gather data that will be used to direct the efforts of the Olweus program.
- A core Olweus team was trained in the program components and will be the leaders in training and evaluating the program. Members of this team include teachers, administrators, parent/community member, school nurse, guidance counselors, RtI specialists, teacher aides and assistants, and counselors/psychologists.
- A whole-school kickoff will take place in September, 2012.
- The premise of the Olweus program is to create clear rules against bullying and for everyone to implement these rules with fidelity to ensure bullying is addressed immediately and appropriately.
- As we continue with our planning and implementation of the program, students will be actively involved in the process with adults, community members, and parents.
- Five components are essential in the success of the program and they include:
2. Classroom
3. Individual
4. Parents
5. Community

Spring is Here!

Yesterday was the first day of spring and there could not be a better day for it. With a high of 76ºF and an average temperature of 61ºF, everyone was in a great mood! But is this weather going to stay? Quite a few weather stations say this weather is only going to stay for the rest of this week. Next friday (3/30/2012) is supposed to have a high of 36ºF, a far cry from the weather that we are growing accustomed to in Central New York. So don’t get too warmed up to this weather!
Check out the picture below that I took of one of our blooming flowers at HCS-we know spring is in the air when flowers start popping up!

Life's Lessons from Marianne Angelillo
Event Date: March 12, 2012

Recently, Hamilton Central had the experience to hear Marianne Angelillo’s story of her son, Matthew Angelillo. Her presentation was on drunk driving and the impact of destructive decisions. She spoke about her son, who was in a terrible accident that took his life and the impact that it has, each day, on their family. Mrs. Angelillo even brought a quilt made from Matthew's favorite t-shirts that a friend made for her family. This very moving presentation was brought to us by Madison County BRiDGES organization. So a very special thanks to all the wonderful people that helped us fund this assembly.
Matthew was 17 when his life was tragically taken in a horrific car accident while his friends were drunk driving. He was appointed to go to the U.S. Air-force Academy, Class of 2009, and was the graduating class of 2005 at Skaneateles High School. Marianne feels that if she shares her story with teens and parents alike, it will help all of us make better decisions. On behalf of Hamilton Central School I would like to say thank you to Marianne Angelillo for being able to talk about Matthew's story to better educate all of us! Check out the pictures below of the postcard distributed by Mrs. Angelillo. The motto "share your stones" was one that she referred to as sharing your story with others so that the load you carry is not as heavy. It was a great message!

The citizens of River City, Iowa take their places tomorrow night in the debut of The Music Man. The classic musical incorporates over 70 Hamilton students with the help of many parents, volunteers and staff to create an unforgettable show. With hits like, “Iowa Stubborn,” “Wells Fargo Wagon” and the unforgettable “76 Trombones,” this show is full of laughs, amazing sets, thrilling dance numbers, outgoing costumes and, of course, catchy tunes that will definitely be stuck in your head! In the musical, a traveling conman greets the stubborn people of Iowa, insisting that they have trouble and that he also has the solution. With a range of tricks up his sleeve, Professor Harold Hill helps River City become more alive than ever before. Definitely cross this off your “to do” list before the weekend ends! You can see it Friday night at 7PM or catch it Saturday at 1PM and 7PM. Hope to see you there!
Travelogue Project Underway
Date: March 14, 2012
Written by: Hayleigh
Over the past few weeks, the 9th grade class has been working on travel logs in a cross-study between English and Social Studies classes. Travel logs are where the student has to be someone or something that travels from one place to another. In their journey, they have to meet an important person in history from any place in the world (with the exception of North America, because it wasn’t discovered yet). Students have chosen to be a range of objects such as a necklace, a person, and even a lion. They could be traveling from Kyoto to Tokyo or on a hajj to Mecca. Next, the students will be making a form of art to go with their travel log. This will be anything from a homemade journal, a small quilt, a film, or a comic that shows what happened in their travel log. The mentors will advise them and help them through it. Below are some pictures from the library where the students were looking at works of art from years past. The students were using this opportunity to decide how to craft their own project.
Second-Grade Agriculture Collaboration
Date: March 9, 2012
Written by: Sam
Over the past few months, Mrs. Merkt and Mrs. Hanson’s second grade classes have teamed up with Mrs. Bossard's eighth graders for a variety of unique learning opportunities. To start with, students made their own homemade ice cream, which they were able to eat as well. These students have also adopted a calf from Mrs. Bossard's farm, and they will receive monthly updates as their calf grows. A special appearance was even made by the Dairy Princess, a very exciting surprise for the second graders and high school students alike. Second grade classes have continued their agricultural experience by planting seeds. The students planted five different types of seeds in each finger of a glove filled with cotton. The students will watch the plants grow with great pleasure and transplant them into a pot with soil. I hope to report again soon on the students progress.

Last week, the Lady Knights played at the Syracuse University for the Section III title. The Lady Knights faced off against Oriskany, who they split with during the regular season. The Lady Knights were lead by Katie, with twelve points, and Keever, with with seven points. Katie and Hayleigh were named to the all-tournament team, which is an accomplishment they should be proud of! Balloon Powered Cars
Date: March 5th
Written by: Annie
Recently, Mrs. Orth’s 7th grade classes ran balloon powered cars (that the students had made themselves) down the hallways of HCS. This activity was part of their speed, distance, motion, and acceleration unit. It demonstrated Newton's Law, which states that "every action has an equal reaction." The balloon car activity required that the cars have three wheels, and according to Mrs.Orth’s observations, the hardest part of was balancing the wheels so that the cars would travel straight when propelled by a balloon. Since there were some variables in the cars, Mrs. Orth supplied the same balloon to each student. Surprisingly, only three popped! There were even prizes given out for three separate categories....and the winners were:
Cell One:
Most Attractive: Yasmend
Greatest Distance: Geordie
Fastest in Five Meters: Karley
Cell Three
Most Attractive: Olivia
Greatest Distance: Jacob
Fastest in Five Meters: Kyle
Most Persistent: Chance (he made FIVE cars)

Getting Ready for P.A.R.P.
Date: March 2, 2012
Written by: Zack
P.A.R.P (People as Reading Partners) is a reading program where where students, parents, and other family and friends can partner up with a HCS student to read and craft reading skills. While doing so, the students are encouraged to read 20 minutes a day. If a student has read for 20 minutes, he or she will receive one point. The school is trying to reach 5,000 points over a 4 week period. For every 1,000 points earned, all students will receive a prize. Each week, HCS will hold a spirit week to keep students excited about reading.
There may be students that do not get read to at home, so we encourage parents, brothers, sisters, grandmas and grandpas to read to their younger peers in the classroom. (Does not necessary have to be related.) HCS encourages everyone to help out at home in this fun reading journey! Volunteers can sign up in the elementary office to read in an elementary classroom. Thank you to the Hamilton PTO for supporting and organizing this annual event!
March 6th is opening assembly. The goal will be presented, along with solicitations for the principal challenge, if the goal is obtained
Check out the pictures below from the PTO P.A.R.P. bulletin board.
