As the holidays quickly arrive, we are aware that many people in the community face challenging economic times. The Hamilton Teacher's Association is dedicated to reaching out to our local friends and families and recently made a donation to the Hamilton Community Chest in the amount of $2, 000. This annual donation is the largest that the Community Chest receives. All members of the HTA want to thank the community for their support of our programs and curriculum and wish you happy holidays and a wonderful 2012!

Giving Thanks at HCS
December 22, 2011
Written by: Brandon G.
Students in Ms.Bossard’s agriculture classes have been making holiday baskets for all HCS faculty, staff, and administrators. The students have constructed a total of 135 baskets, as a way to thank their teachers and other professionals for all they do on a daily basis! They also had some help from Springside Farms in Fabius, through their generous donation all of the pine to complete the baskets. A huge thank you to the Hamilton Emerald Foundation making this project possible. In this season of giving, it was wonderful to be able to give thanks to all of the people who make HCS such a wonderful place to learn!

Yes, it’s that time of year again. Snow is falling (a little) and the holidays are right around the bend! With the holidays and winter in Hamilton, come many musical events at HCS. Last Thursday, December 15th, the elementary students took the stage. From singing their hearts out with Mrs. Silver, to playing their trumpets and violins with Mr. Shenkel, the kids sounded great! Below is a clip from the elementary concert.
Music is a great way for people to express themselves and it’s fun to learn how to play different instruments. Our students are fortunate to have so many wonderful opportunities at HCS, including those within our music program!
Check out the video below with some of the highlights from the elementary winter concert.

Togo Reads with Elementary Students
December 21, 2011
Written by: Mrs. Carter Jackson and Mrs. April
Mrs. April's and Mrs. Carter Jackson's fifth grade students had completed a unit of study in which they read true stories of shelter dogs that were trained to become service and therapy dogs. To conclude this unit, a special guest visited their class on Wednesday. Togo, a beautiful white Samoyed, and his trainer, Carol Kinne, spent an hour answering questions, posing for pictures, and reading poetry together. Togo is trained therapy dog that specializes in working with children in the area of reading. He has worked in the Norwich City School District and at Pathfinder Village. It was great opportunity to experience firsthand the special qualities of a therapy dog.
HCS Makes a Difference for a Neighbor
Date: December 19, 2011
Written by: Mr. Coriale
You may remember a post in early November to the Digital Bulletin Board about a school-wide initiative to reach out to a community in need in New York State. The Gilboa-Conesville Central School District had many families who lost their homes, businesses, and possessions as a result of the severe flooding in early September. HCS teacher, Ms. Briggs, organized a school-wide fundraiser to collect winter clothing for these families. She then traveled to this community with donations from HCS students, families, and community members.
We are so proud of our learning community for coming together to make a difference for a neighbor in need. We would also like to thank Ms. Briggs for organizing this event and for giving our students an opportunity to continue to show empathy, kindness, and compassion.
Check out the video below from Ms. Briggs' trip a few weeks ago!

Humvee visits HCS
Date: December 16, 2011
Written by: Noah and Erica
Today, National Guard recruiters brought in a Humvee, which is a military vehicle, to Mrs. Bossard's mechanics class. This class, along with many other students, got to experience the thrill of seeing an army Humvee in their classroom. They got to see how the truck’s external features worked, the composition of the truck that makes it so tough and durable, the rugged interior, and they even got a close-up view of the engine components. All students in the class received a manual about the truck to take with them. Second and sixth graders got to sit in the truck and were even invited to start up the engine to feel its power. This was truly a unique experience for everyone involved and each student had exciting and positive things to say about the recruiters and their Humvee.
A huge thank you to the National Guard recruiters for providing this opportunity for HCS! Check out the pictures below!

iPods and iPads Across New York State
Date: December 14, 2011
Written by: Mr. Coriale
Over the past few weeks, HCS fourth and sixth graders have hosted educators from around the state to share their experiences with using the iPod and iPad in their learning. For the sixth graders, this is one of many past presentations they have participated in. Students always represent Hamilton well, and express their authentic feelings with pose and maturity.
The first presentation was to a group of teachers and administrators from Clinton Central School and DCMO BOCES and, yesterday, we Skyped with educators from SUNY Potsdam. What was the purpose behind these presentations? Other educators want to know how these devices are impacting student learning and how they are used in our classrooms. Our students did a phenomenal job expressing the impact that they have had on their learning, specifically through differentiation, collaboration, and access to the outside world. We have so many wonderful tools in our toolbox to share with learners, and the iPods and iPads provide one more tool to engage, excite, and reach learners' individual needs.

We will be competing against many other schools in the state for the first prize of $15,000 dollars to promote this important message across New York. Muckraker Magazine
Date: December 13, 2011
Written by: Mr. Coriale and Mr. Jarcho
Mr. Jarcho's eighth graders have proven that they are expert muckrakers! A muckraker is a reporter who brings injustices and issues to the public's attention. In teams, students took on the roles of investigative reporters, editors, photographers, and cartoonists who had the charge of bringing issues of the Progressive Era to life before the public eye. The mission of each news team was to capture the spirit of the reform era (1890-1920) with accurate, eye-catching graphics and news angles that exposed the issues and accomplishments of the times.
Check out these Muckraker Magazines from these eighth grade news teams. We are confident that everyone will be equally as impressed with the sophistication of our students! They are all PDF files so they are viewable for everyone. There may be more added, so be sure to check back!

TATF Makes a Difference
Date: December 8, 2011
Written by: Mrs. Torre
The Hamilton extra-curricular service group, Teaching Awareness Through Friends (TATF, formerly Teen AIDS Task Force), raised money in honor of World AIDS Day to purchase holiday gifts for a local woman dealing with HIV/AIDS. Students sold "red ribbons" during high school lunch the week of November 30th to collect the money to purchase the gifts. The "Holiday Angel" project is coordinated by AIDS Community Resources to help serve their clients in need. ACR serves many local, lower income individuals with HIV/AIDS and their families. The high cost of treatment, coupled with everyday financial stressors, make the holidays a diffcult time for many ACR clients. A huge thank you to the entire HCS TATF for making a difference in the lives of others!

The Hamilton boys junior varsity basketball team started their season yesterday against Owen D. Young and finished strong. The boys played really well together to dominate the first three quarters, both defensively and offensively. Late in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats started to put on a lot of pressure and driving to the basket, but the rock-solid Hamilton defense kept shutting them down and finished the game with a score of 42-28. Great start to the season, boys!
