Yesterday, Hamilton was filled with elementary students as they made their way through town in the annual Halloween Parade, led by the HCS Marching Band, directed by HCS band teacher Mr. Jon Rossi. Almost everyone who lives in town, including parents and younger siblings of HCS students, lined the streets watching as their children walked while showing off their costumes. Kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the event with their teachers and classmates. The kindergarten students got the opportunity to ride in the hay wagon driven by David Crumb. Below are pictures of the Halloween Parade.
The 'Real" Face of Agriculture
Date: October 28, 2011
Written by: Johanna Bossard and Jamie West
Inspired by Patrick Carr's visit last month, HCS sixth graders and the mechanics/welding class toured local agricultural businesses and continuing education consortiums. The purpose of this journey was to expose HCS students to local agriculture in the hopes that they see the opportunities of returning to our rural community, if they choose to, after graduation. Even if a student does not pursue a career in farming, students learned how agriculture impacts their daily lives from eating and the clothing they wear to the cars they drive and the materials they use in school. For many students, this was their first trip to a farm, and they learned from experts in the field about dairy facts, running a successful business, and caring for the land in a sustainable way. Additionally, students learned about local educational opportunities to continue their post-secondary studying in a hands-on environment at Morrisville State College. At Barbland Dairy, students even saw a calf being born!
So, where exactly did students go?

Mrs. Sabino's ninth grade Global Studies class gave their taste buds a new experience by dining on traditional Indian cuisine as they learned about the Hindu holiday of Diwali. This event was a celebration of the completion of students' map project. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, and as you can see in the pictures below, students enjoyed learning about new cultures and traditions.
Thirteen Moons on the Turtle's Back
Date: October 26, 2011
Written by: Eric Coriale
Mrs. Roy and her seventh and eighth grade students have spent time delving deep into the importance behind visual imagery as way to be metacognitive readers, thinkers, and students. After reading, Thirteen Moons on the Turtle's Back, students spent time reading poems for each of the Native American's thirteen moons, and creating sections for the turtle's back. Each section portrayed the visual picture that students envisioned. As you can see, the turtle's back is full of unique portrayals, which is exactly what Mrs. Roy hoped students would realize. She wanted students to learn how important each unique individual's visual interpretation is to their understanding of the world around them.
Happy Halloween for the Hamilton Food Cupboard
Date: October 26, 2011
Written by: Hayleigh and Bailey
Happy Halloween! On Monday, October 31st, the HCS Almeda organization is going trick-or-treating for the Hamilton Food Cupboard. Groups are going down each street in the village, asking people for food donations. Almeda is going with the girls’ Colgate Lacrosse team. They are trick-or-treating from 4:30 to 6:00pm. We please ask for non-perishable food. Almeda members will bring all the food gathered to the school, and from there the Colgate women's lacrosse team will bring it back to the campus to weigh it to see how many pounds of food was donated. Many families in the community rely on the Hamilton food cupboard. We want to supply five to ten days of food for a family who is in need. This is the fifth year that Hamilton has trick-or-treated for the Food Cupboard, but this is the first time that we have joined together with the Women's lacrosse team. It should be a great turnout!
We thank anyone in advance who donates food. We also thank the Almeda leaders, Ms. Terry Monty and Mrs. Barbara Orth, the women’s Colgate lacrosse head coach, Heather Young, and the Hamilton Food Cupboard Director, Sue Collins.

Greeting Web with Mr. Latella
Date: October 21, 2011
Written by: Eric Coriale
Each morning, fifth graders in Mr. Latella's class start their day on the right foot with a morning meeting. This meeting time is dedicated to on-going community building through collaborative interactions. If you were to walk by Mr. Latella's classroom during a morning meeting, you would see students talking, listening, reflecting, and thinking with one another. What a great way to start the day!
Below are pictures from this morning's meeting. As I walked by, I couldn't help but turn around watch! Mr. Latella's students were greeting each other and creating a class web at the same time. As each student greeted another, they would toss a roll of string across the circle. The end result: one totally cool classroom web! As you can tell from the pictures, these fifth graders love their morning meeting time!

The Journey Begins!

The widely anticipated journey has FINALLY begun in fourth grade! For the past two months, students have been asking when they will begin using iPod Touches as an additional learning tool in the classroom. Three years ago, HCS launched a pilot program with the now sixth grade class. This pilot program put an iPod Touch into the hands of every fourth grader. This pilot was a huge success and proved to be an valuable tool for all students. Currently, you will find iPods in all elementary classrooms, iPads in sixth grade, and iPods and iPads scattered in countless places at the secondary level. Before actually beginning using the iPods, fourth graders spent time today discussing uses for their new iPods and brainstormed expectations to keep their devices safe.
So, what are the iPods being used for? Check out the poster below for a list of a few ways we are using iPods to enhance student learning at HCS!

Our Hamilton sports teams are having relatively good seasons this year. Although some of the records may seem low, most of our sports teams are playing in classes above our own, Class D. Scary Sweater Invasion in Hamilton Hallways
October 18, 2011
Written by: Elena and Brandon
Finding Trident Gum, Sour Patch Kids, Justin Bieber activity books and other little surprises when opening lockers after each class is just the beginning of the Almeda expirience. Almeda is a nonprofit organization open to girls, grades 10 and up to raise money for charities and just have a good time. This week has been initiation week for all the new members, and each day has had a different theme. Monday, as shown in the slide show below, was Scary Sweater day. Girls dug through the back of their closets to find their ugliest and itchiest sweaters from owl print to argyle. Other days will include Western Day, Rainbow/Unicorn Day, Disney Day and to top it all off, Formal Day. Each of the new members has gotten secret sponsors that leave them notes and presents every day and will soon find the identity of their mystery friends, Friday, at the initiation dessert banquet. Then, it's time to begin another year of doing great things in our school, local, and global communities!

Mrs Bosard, the HCS Agriculture and Tech teacher, has her 7th and 8th graders working very hard on two different projects this marking period. The 7th grade Agriculture class is planting poinsettias and various vegetables in the green house located off the Ag classroom. The 8th grade Tech students are working to complete their CO2 cars in the wood shop. They are also learning how to use all the machines and tools located in the shop. Here are some photos of the plants in the green house and the 8th graders working on their projects.

Elementary Teachers go 2.0!

Elementary teachers are in the midst of creating new websites that are much more user-friendly than our current sites. Our teachers work very hard to keep their sites updated for parents, and we applaud them because our web provider was, in many ways, challenging and time-consuming to use. Our new sites, courtesy of Weebly, are much more intuitive, allowing teachers to update their website with ease. This allows them to easily stay connected with parents and families while not consuming precious time. This change-over will be taking place gradually over the next few months, so check back to see all of the great new sites. There are already some new sites that are live on our website, and they are listed below. You will notice that they include great elements such as videos, images, blogs, newsletters, curriculum, and much more!

HCS Goes Orange for Anti-Bullying
October 14, 2011
Written by: Tyler
On Wednesday, October 12th, teachers and students alike joined forces by wearing orange to promote anti-bullying awareness. Bullying, which is a sad and unfortunate part of high school, can be battled and prevented with everyone stepping up for others and refusing to be a bystander. It is great to have the community unify to prevent this unnecessary part of school and make a safe place for student’s to learn.
Hamilton Walks to Fight Hunger!
October 13, 2011
Written by: Noah and Erica
Every year for the past 17 years, Hamilton has put on a CROP walk that represents the walk that many less fortunate people in other countries have to make daily, just to get basic food and water. Walking far to get food may seem crazy to you and I, but to many this is considered a luxury to have. Even those bare essentials of food and water are scarce to many around the world, and that needs to be changed. We in Hamilton put on a CROP walk to raise money for the Church World Service to help countries and communities in need of food. It not only helps provide food and water, but other resources as well that can help less fortunate people meet their own needs. However, not all of the money raised will leave the community because 25% of the money raised will go to hunger-fighting programs in our own community. It is definitely for a good cause and takes place this Sunday, October 17th at 1pm at the Hamilton First Baptist Church on 27 Broad Street. If you are interested in signing up, you can register at the church at 12:30pm or find HCS students to sign up and donate. Your donations and participation are greatly appreciated!

A Walk in Someone Else's Shoes
October 13, 2011
Written by: Eric Coriale
As ninth grade students delve into reading Of Mice and Men with Mrs. Moren, they are involved in many discussions about people with disabilities, as one of the main characters faces challenges with his own disability. As students continue to talk about empathy, understanding, and caring for one another, secondary counselors Ms. Simmons and Mrs. Barnum worked with students yesterday in an activity titled, "A Walk in Some Else's Shoes". The goal of the activity was to learn and begin to understand what it may be like for people who have various conditions, some of which are neurological, such as ADD, Tourette's Syndrome, or Traumatic Brain Injury. These different conditions may make it challenging for the people affected by it to write, process numbers or learn in a way that others might. Students went through stations and participated in activities that gave them an opportunity to "walk in someone else's shoes." The goal of this was for students to appreciate and understand differences and place value on the many strengths that EVERYONE has to offer their learning community.
Marine Biology Adventures
October 13, 2011
Written by: Eric Coriale
Many would think that because of Hamilton's location, we would have few opportunities to explore marine life. Students in the Marine Biology Enrichment Bunch found out that this was far from the truth! Thanks to Colgate Professor Damhnait McHugh, many third and fifth graders were able to explore, touch, and learn about many marine creatures. Ms. McHugh brought a vast collection of marine life including sea cucumbers, star fish, sea amenities, crabs, and much more to our after-school enrichment program! Additionally, students were able to touch real baleen from a baleen whale, huge lobster claw, and even a porpoise jawbone! Students participating in this five-week enrichment opportunity have explored plankton, sharks, and many more marine-related topics with HCS science teacher Mrs. Orth. A huge thank you to Mrs. Orth and Ms. McHugh for such a great learning experience for so many students! Check out the pictures below from Ms. McHugh's visit!
Smart Board for Smart PreK Students
October 12, 2011
Written by: Eric Coriale
It goes without mentioning that all of our students at HCS are smart, smart, smart! In addition to being so intelligent, our students are using SMART Boards as a way to enrich their learning experience in the classroom. Today, Mrs. Kenyon introduced the SMART Board to her PreK students for the first time, and, as you can tell by the picture below, they loved it! Students were able to write/trace their names with wacky pens while their classmates cheered them on from the carpet. Tomorrow, Mrs. Kenyon will use her SMART Board for students to interact with the letter "L", which is the letter of the week in PreK!
Fire Safety Week
October 12, 2011
Written by: Hayleigh and Bailey
This week in the elementary wing, students are learning about fire safety. The elementary classes are singing songs about fire safety, practicing stop, drop and roll and reading books about being safe in case a fire occurs. Some grades are going to the Hamilton Fire Department for a fire safety presentation and will learn what to do in case of a fire. All students got firefighter hats for a souvenir. The students learned what all the equipment is used for and saw the firefighters put their gear. Here are some pictures from Mrs. Kenyon’s trip to the Hamilton Fire Department and a video from Mrs. Rose’s class.
The Chase!
October 12, 2011
Written by: Ann-Elise and Patrick
The kindergarteners are warming up for the scooter races by playing a game of Pac-Man Tag, simulating the classic maze-like arcade game. The rules of the game are as follows:
1. The child who is "it" takes the role of Pac-Man.
2. The other children, who are the ghosts, must avoid Pac-Man at all costs!
The Pac-Man must move his or her arms in a chomping motion while chasing the ghosts. This all must happen without stepping off the colorful lines on the gym floor.
Watch as the ghost leads the Pac-Man on a wild chase!

Hamilton Fights Breast Cancer

Written by: Sam and Barney
On Saturday, October 8th, the Hamilton Varsity Field Hockey team will be playing Clinton, under the lights of the Hamilton stadium, at 7 P.M. This will be a game to support breast cancer awareness. Both teams will be wearing pink uniforms to show support for the cause. There will also be a way to make a donation at the game. It is suggested that fans also wear pink to show support. Shown below are pictures of students and faculty wearing pink in school on Friday to help advertise the game and show their support to the field hockey players and their dedication to fighting back against cancer!
Artist or Chef?
October 7, 2011
Written by: Branden and Peter
Mrs. Smith’s first grade class has been working hard on a special art project. The students are making homemade pizzas out of cardboard and other artistic decorations. They have been working on this project for a couple of days now and seem to be making great progress. They look like "soon-to-be chefs" and artists at the same time. We can’t wait to see what they look like after the students are done with the finishing touches.
The Lawn Boy Returns to Mr. Latella's Class
October 7, 2011
Written by: Devin and Andrew
Even when Mr. Latella is out of his classroom, his students get to listen to a story read aloud on a daily basis. This helps with skills such as creativity, listening to an expert reader, and even sparks some great conversations among students. All elementary students have the daily opportunity to listen to their teacher model fluent reading. Delving into a great book is one of the many highlights of their day.
In this video, Mrs. Mingonis reads The Lawn Boy Returns and, as you can see in the video below, the students are enjoying the book!

Digital Broadcasting Makes Newscasts
October 5th, 2011
Written by: Elena and Brandon
The Digital Broadcasting class, which is opened to students grades 10 through 12, have begun thinking about the HCTV weekly newscast. Students had to make a sample newscast of any event, real or fake, to display their reporting and camera skills to help decided which part in the real newscast they'll be featured in. For many of us, this was our first time creating newscasts, and our skills will continue to build throughout the year. Below is a sample newscast from Elena Haskins.
HCS Spirit Week
Week of September 26th, 2011
Written by: Juan and Lauren
This past week, high school students, faculty and staff all participated in Spirit Week. On Monday, everyone got to wear their class color and every grade had a different color to wear. Tuesday, everyone showed off their favorite sports teams by wearing jerseys for Jersey Day. On Wednesday, it was Pajama Day. Students got to come in their fuzzy PJ’s and slippers. Even some teachers showed up in their pajamas. Thursday, everyone went back to the 80’s for Decade Day. Lastly, on Friday, they got to show some school spirit by wearing green and white in support of the boys soccer game, which took place Friday evening.
