Recently in Ag. Mechanics, we were assigned individual projects by our teacher Mrs. Bossard. My project was a bowling ball ramp for my second grade buddy. Being restricted to his wheelchair, Danny was not able to bowl in the physical education unit with his class. So my project was to construct a bowling ramp that he could use in his wheelchair that could be used to enable him to bowl easier. In catalogs these ramps cost roughly $300. My supplies for this ramp cost approximately $30. It consisted of two ¾” pipes, and one 1” pipe. Danny came down to get measured for his ramp, and after configuring his measurements, I used the pythagorean theorem along with some sin, cos, and tan math to help with my angle and hypotenuse values. Using those measurements, I made a prototype out of abundant scrap metal, to see where modifications needed to be made. After a successful outcome I proceeded to bend and MIG weld to achieve my final product. This project taught me the real life applications of all of the skills Mrs. Bossard, along with the math department, have taught me. I was able to combine them to make something applicable to life.
Although it's not even the end of December, our team is hard at work preparing for next year's schedule. The guidance office organized our annual electives fair to give secondary students a glimpse into the world of classes they can choose from. From mechanics and computerized accounting to foreign language and AP courses, our small school offers many opportunities for our students to be grow, learn, and discover. On Monday, December 17th here in Hamilton Central School’s own cafeteria, the counseling office has organized a shopping extravaganza! The shopping extravaganza begins at 3:00pm and goes all the way through 7:30pm. The items customers can shop for include gently used items such as clothes, toys, books, and much more! This is a great way to get some holiday shopping done for a good cause! All items up for sale have been donated by members of our community and are being sold for whatever price shoppers see fit, because of the ‘name your price’ policy. There will be a gift wrapping station and shopping bags will be available too! So be sure to come out and get some fantastic shopping done!
Tomorrow will be a two hour delay for HCS! Students may sleep longer or catch up on homework, or even just take a few hours to relax. The teachers at HCS will come in at their regular time. Why? Well, because they will be working on the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention program. What is this? It is a program where teachers and staff train their colleagues in the program, which is centered around stopping bullying. Teachers will be discussing and planning bullying, prevention strategies, classroom meetings, interventions and school rules for HCS. This will be the third training for the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention program. The kickoff to the program for students is in January. I had a chance to talk with one of the program’s teachers, Mr. Coriale about this program. Mr. Coriale had this to say, “We hope that this program continues to create an environment where students are safe and free from bullying.”
What comes to your mind when you think about the word HOG? Maybe its pork? Bacon? Obsessive eating? Well when you mention HOG in Hamilton the response you will get is the Hamilton Outdoor Group. HOG offers 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders opportunities to join Colgate students for outside activities such as building shelters, making campfires, hiking, scavenger hunting and playing other outdoor games. Fifth grader and member of HOG Maddy Merkt says that, “HOG is fun because we do a lot of fun stuff, and we get to hang out with friends too.” If you are able to join HOG you should consider it because it sounds like a lot of fun.
The PreK had a gathering to celebrate Thanksgiving, before we left for break, by inviting their parents, families, friends, and classroom volunteers to a pancake breakfast. This was a way for students and PreK teacher to thank everyone for all they do for our students! This was the second annual successful event that’s been held so far. The guests donated the supplies, and the kids made their own batter and cooked up pancakes for about eighty people! Check out some of the pictures below from our breakfast! Last night, Hamilton Central School’s boys’ varsity and JV basketball teams had a scrimmage against Stockbridge. The Hamilton boys showed their desire to do their best from the first minutes of the game and used the chance to practice their tactics very well. Team Captain B. Harris had a few sweet counter attacks and there were many great jump shots by B.Yacavone. Coach praised the team by saying, “We were better from the first touch of the ball and the focus that we showed on the both sides of the pitch lead us to a great game.”
Congratulations to the team and best wishes for the first regular season game on Tuesday, December 4th at Owen D. Young Central School. Have you seen the movie It’s A Wonderful Life? Many, many people have seen the movie and it is definitely an enjoyable movie for people all around the world, especially around Christmas time. That’s because the movie is a Christmas-themed play. The famous 1946 film It’s A Wonderful Life was recently performed by the HCS Masquers, who did a wonderful job!
The play was in the style of a radio play. The cast was on stage at all times except for intermission. The cast was consisted of HCS students and each role played an important part in the entire production. Masquers is a great activity to join in and HCS students who have been doing masquers enjoy it greatly. Bullying is a terrible thing that keeps happening to students around the world, and often goes unreported. Here at HCS, however, the faculty is becoming more proactive on the issue and doing even more to help put an end to bullying. The first new way to report bullying is through text. The tech department has developed a texting hotline which allows students to report bullying via text, which will be read by a HCS faculty member and dealt with immediately. The second of the two new ways is an email account specifically designed for filing a bullying report. This email address has been given to students and enables them to send their tips through email where a faculty member will read the report and take the necessary steps to address the issue. All this progress made by HCS is definitely a step in the right direction to help stop bullying, and it will hopefully mean that no bullying incident will go unreported.
HCS first graders can tell you all about their Thanksgiving feast, most of which is far from what the pilgrims had on their table for the first Thanksgiving. As a way to understand our country's roots, and to connect the past to the present, first grade teachers hosted a traditional Thanksgiving feast before the holiday break. From venison and vegetables to crab and corn bread, HCS students got a taste for what the first feast was like. Check out the pictures below from this life-long le |
